The most iconic feature of One Piece’s pirating saga is the mysterious Devil Fruits – oddly colored fruits of unknown origin that appear throughout the series. Upon consumption, they grant the eater fantastic powers, but strip away their ability to swim. A person can only consume one of these miracle fruits, and each one is unique (although they can be very similar to one another), so naturally, you’ll want to get your hands on the most powerful one if you want a good shot at being the Pirate King.
But what makes a Devil Fruit strong? Abilities can range from permanently turning your body into rubber, to granting you total control of an element. Having so many Devil Fruits out in the wild makes for some very powerful players going after the One Piece, but power is measured by more than brute strength alone on the Grand Line. Keeping that in mind, here are my picks for the 10 most powerful Devil Fruits in One Piece!
10. Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix
Marco ate the Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix, a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allows him to transform into a phoenix and a human-phoenix hybrid at will. He has a very well-developed mastery over his transformation, allowing him to alter select parts of his body as he needs to. This power is the source of his nickname “Marco the Phoenix”.
As a Zoan, Marco enjoys a great boost to his physical abilities, gaining strength enough to restrain two extremely powerful Ancient Zoan users at once. Furthermore, as a bird-type Zoan, Marco gains wings that allow him to fly in both his hybrid form and full phoenix form,[ as well as taloned bird legs that he can use to perform powerful kicks or slash enemies with.
Marco can freely create his “Blue Flames of Resurrection” from any part of his body, even without actually transforming, and they always cover him while transformed. These phoenix flames are stronger than normal fire and possess tremendous healing properties; while shrouded in the flames, Marco can rapidly self-regenerate from nearly any physical damage he receives, like a phoenix being reborn. It is noted, or at least implied, that no matter what injury he is dealt, he can recover by flame (even injures that he suffered while his powers are nullified). Such immense power of recovery allows Marco to ward off extremely potent attacks with little issue, like Kizaru’s volley of light bulletsor even Akainu’s magma punch.
Marco can also share his healing flames with others, allowing him to mend them as well, even multiple individuals at once. However, his flames are less effective on anyone other than himself.
9. Hie Hie no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit
Kuzan ate the Hie Hie no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to create, control, and transform his body into ice. Compared to most Logia users who, when transformed, can let physical attacks pass through their “fluid” bodies, Kuzan is more easily hit since ice is a solid element. However, he still goes unharmed by enemy attacks that are not infused with Haki; instead of dissipating out of harm’s way, his body shatters apart when struck, only to reform as effortlessly as any Logia user thereafter.
Kuzan is able to form constructs out of ice. In combat, Kuzan can create weaponry, primarily forming swords and spears, but he can also make more elaborate constructs, like a giant pheasant to send flying at enemies.
On a smaller scale, Kuzan can quickly incapacitate enemies by freezing them solid upon physical contact or from a distance by launching waves of ice,and may even encase opponents in large spheres of ice to make escape even more difficult.Aside from potentially suffering dangerous degrees of frostbite and hypothermia, those frozen by Kuzan are left in a very fragile state, as they body could be shattered by any kind of impact;] however, a person can be freed from the ice if they are thawed out properly and carefully. On a larger scale, Kuzan can spread his freeze outward over tremendous distances, casually icing over several square kilometers of ocean within seconds of dipping his hand in the water, or turning a pair of mountainous tsunamis into icebergs just as swiftly, using icy beams shot from his hands.Despite the speed at which Kuzan can flash-freeze massive amounts of water, the ice he thereby forms tends to be extremely thick and able to persist for long periods—several days even.
Kuzan can also bypass his weakness to water and falling therein, by freezing it before he can sink below the surface. Not only does this keep him from drowning, it lets him prevent enemies from escaping by sea, by freezing their ships in place, or render the sea a solid battleground for entire armies to fight on.
Even by Logia standards, this ability has impressive potential—when used excessively for ten days straight, it was able to permanently alter the very climate of half an island, rendering it a frozen, uninhabitable wasteland with constantly raging blizzards.
8. Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu, a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit
Kaidou ate the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu, a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allows him to transform into a full serpentine Azure Dragon and a human-dragon hybrid at will. His full Beast Form is massive, roughly half the size of a small town, and is covered with extremely durable, blue scales, dramatically increasing the tremendous natural durability of Kaidou’s body. His Human-Beast form grants him a massive increase to his speed, agility, and mobility, while further increasing, the immense boost to his vast resilience and physical strength.
As a dragon, Kaidou is capable of creating special clouds called “Flame Clouds” and using them as footholds, allowing him to move through the air. These clouds can also be used to lift other objects; they are even capable of lifting an entire island out of the sea.He can also release devastating blasts of fire from his mouth, which can instantly deal significant damage to or fully obliterate large structures, such as an entire mountain and the ruined castle that stood upon it. By breathing flames in the shape of a dragon around his body, Kaidou can coat himself in a layer of heat so intense that it can instantly melt substances that come in contact with it, which discourages physical attacks. Aside from his fire breath, Kaidou can also release other elemental attacks from his mouth; he can release bolts of lightning by roaring, or invisible, sharp wind blades by blowing. By twisting his massive body, Kaidou can create tornados which can blow his enemies off the battlefield and into the air.
Kaidou has mastered his Devil Fruit powers to the level that he can access some of his draconic abilities without needing to transform, such as generating Flame Clouds to levitate Onigashima. He was even able to do so while battling against five members of the Worst Generation alongside Big Mom.
7. Pika Pika no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit
Kizaru ate the Pika Pika no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to create, control, and transform his body into light. Among other things, he is able to move, travel, and perform kicks at the speed of light, shoot laser beams, and blind his opponents.
For offense, Kizaru can shoot powerful laser beams from his fingertips and the bottoms of his feet, which can easily pierce through flesh and/or set off massive, heat-based explosions. He can fire a single laser with pinpoint accuracy or unleash a massive gatling of laser bullets over a wide area.
By turning his body into light, Kizaru can move at lightspeed, allowing him to maneuver around the battlefield without his enemies being able to keep up unless they have sufficiently well-developed Kenbunshoku Haki. He can make his light body shift in place, allowing him to instantly reposition himself at a different location on the battlefield, and can also send out a beam of light that he can merge with and travel on to reach an intended location. Said light beam can only follow a straight line, though it can be reflected off of surfaces in a mirror-like fashion, allowing the beam (and thus Kizaru) to travel in zigzag.
His lightspeed mobility lets Kizaru enhance his melee attacks. By moving his leg at the speed of light, the admiral’s kicks can be given massive weight and momentum, greatly increasing their power and allowing Kizaru to deal tremendous damage to opponents with individual blows.
Additionally, Kizaru can stun and blind his opponents by emitting super-bright flashes of light, as well as, for close-quarters combat, “solidify” light into the shape of a massive sword to wield by hand against an enemy swordsman.
6. Doku Doku no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit
Magellan ate the Doku Doku no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to create and control poison. He can produce various types of poison, ranging from a mild irritant to a strong paralyzing agent, to a deadly and highly corrosive toxin. He can produce these poisons in either liquid or gaseous states. He is also completely immune to all types of poison.
He can create massive amounts of liquid poison that he can shape into a gigantic monstrous entity, such as a hydra or a demon. Magellan can use his poison as a means of transportation, sending himself through it like a pneumatic tube. He can also cover himself with a thick layer of liquid poison, giving him a virtual suit of armor. Said armor does not offer much fortitude, but it does dissuade his opponents from attacking him directly for fear of being poisoned.
His poisoning can be cured fairly easily individually, however, a mix of various poisons is nearly impossible to cure.
His most powerful poison is called Kinjite, which Magellan himself has stated is powerful enough to “destroy Impel Down itself”. Not only is this poison more lethal and fast acting than most, but it also spreads out from any surface it touches, literally “infecting” everything, including stone.
He likes to add poison to his food for flavor, while he is immune to the poison, the tainted food afflicts him with excessive diarrhea, causing him to spend approximately 10 hours a day on the toilet. This is a big problem for him since he loves to eat poisoned food.
5. Gomu Gomu no Mi / Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika a Mythical Zoan-type fruit
When he was 7 years old, Luffy unwittingly ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit, after finding it in a chest owned by the Red Hair Pirates. It gives his body the properties of rubber, allowing him to stretch, bounce, bend, twist, and inflate any part of his body. Initially, Luffy was unable to control his stretching, but was able to master it after ten years of training on Dawn Island, and further master it during the two years he spent training with Silvers Rayleigh on Rusukaina.
During the Wano Country Arc, it was revealed that it is actually a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit, the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, which allows the user to become an incarnation of Nika the Sun God. This grants Luffy’s body a rubber physiology and allows him to fight however he pleases, just as long as he can imagine it. According to the Five Elders, because of the smiles Nika can put on the faces of others, he is known as the “Warrior of Liberation“, and that “there is no power more ridiculous in all the world”.
He is able to stretch any part of his body; he can stretch his arms to extend the reach of his punches, stretch his legs to extend the reach of his kicks, and stretch his neck to extend the reach of his headbutt. His stretching also allows him to reach faraway places, as he can stretch and grab onto something at that location and pull himself there. He can further enhance his attack power by twisting his body parts around each other and spinning them.
Defensively, Luffy, being made of rubber, is completely immune to lightning. He also cannot be harmed by blunt attacks not imbued with Busoshoku Haki, including punches, blunt weapons, and even being stepped on by gigantic opponents. If struck by blunt projectiles, such as bullets or cannonballs, he can bounce them back toward the place it came from, potentially threatening the one who launched it. He can also easily survive falling from great heights.
He can suck in a large amount of air to inflate his torso like a balloon. His inflated belly greatly enhances his rubbery defense and his ability to bounce things back. It also keeps him from sinking if he falls into the water.
Over the course of his voyage in the Grand Line, he developed techniques he calls Gears to utilize his Devil Fruit to combat stronger opponents, such as speeding up his own blood flow to increase his speed or enlarging his bones and muscles for more powerful strikes. During his training on Rukuskaina, he learned how to combine his Haki with his rubber abilities, making his already destructive attacks inconceivably faster and stronger.
In Wano Country, his fruit awakened after his apparent “death” and third loss against Kaidou, granting him immeasurably awesome powers that the World Government itself greatly fears. Among these astonishing abilities are strengthening his rubbery body and granting him more freedom. In addition to this, Luffy is afforded the enhancements common among Zoan Devil Fruits, including greater strength, speed, and a faster recovery rate. He also displayed the ability to bestow the properties of rubber into the environment around him.
4. Goro Goro no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit
Enel ate the Goro Goro no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit which allows him to create, control, and transform his body into lightning. He can use a variety of lightning-based attacks, either by channeling lightning through his body or by striking the drums on his back. Its power is said to be invincible.[6]
He is able to attack his opponents with powerful bolts of lightning. He can freely control the power output he unleashes, up to a maximum of 200,000,000 volts. When amplified by his ship, his powers became strong enough to easily destroy an entire island.
Enel can also use his power for transportation, he can move at the speed of lightning and travel through conductive materials. It can be used for medical purposes as well; in the event that he takes significant damage, he can use his electricity to restart his own heart. He can even use his powers to greatly enhance his mantra to near-omniscient levels by reading electric-signals in the air from afar.
He is also capable of creatively using his Devil Fruit to raise the temperature of gold using electricity, and then manipulate and shape it using electromagnetism, allowing him to completely rebuild it into any shape he desires. Both his trident and personal flying ark were formed with this power.
His mini-series suggests that he does not need to breathe, and can survive outside of the atmosphere.
3. Gura Gura no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit
Whitebeard ate the Gura Gura no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allowed him to cause quakes and generate powerful shockwaves. This power is considered to be the strongest Devil Fruit power within the Paramecia class. According to Sengoku, Whitebeard had the power to destroy the world.
He had the power to send incredibly powerful shockwaves through the air, creating cracks in the air itself in the process. These shockwaves possess devastating offensive might, being able to clash evenly with the Magu Magu no Mi, the Devil Fruit with the highest attack power out of all the Devil Fruits. He could use these shockwaves to quickly take down multiple enemies over a widespread area or take down a single target with terrifying effectiveness, even Giants. He could also use his shockwaves defensively, as their vast raw power could easily stop incoming attacks. He could also generate strong vibrations from his body that could easily shatter ice.
He could use his power to shake, rupture, and tilt the landscape itself. By striking at the general area with his quake powers, he could cause large earthquakes and, under the right circumstances, massive tsunamis. His quakes would cause serious damage and alterations to the surrounding landscape, destroying buildings, creating large crevices in the ground, and pushing up fragments of the ground into new rock formations. He could even “grab” the surrounding area itself and tilt it, described as making the entire sea tilt.
Whitebeard could use his power to enhance his physical attacks by surrounding his hands and feet with concentrated quake bubbles. These quake bubbles would release a small but powerful shockwave on impact, greatly increasing the destructive power of his melee attacks. He could also surround the blade of his polearm with a quake bubble, greatly increasing its destructive power as well.
Soon after Whitebeard’s death, his power was stolen by Blackbeard through unknown means.
2. Magu Magu no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit
Sakazuki ate the Magu Magu no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to create, control, and transform his body into magma. His magma is extremely hot and highly explosive, thus making it well-suited for combat, allowing Sakazuki to burn, melt, and destroy anything in his path—in fact, among all Devil Fruits, Sakazuki’s is said to offer the greatest attack power.
Sakazuki’s primary method of combat is transforming his arms into magma to launch burning punches (or clawed thrusts) that can easily penetrate human bodies, drastically enlarge his arms to throw forward giant magma fists meant to reach enemies farther away, and even launch multiple magma fists as a barrage of meteor-like projectiles, devastating the battlefield. Otherwise, he has been seen shaping his magma fist into a fanged dog head, as a nod to his animal motif.
Beside the invulnerability of Sakazuki’s magma body against all but Haki attacks, its heat has enemies heavily discouraged from coming near and striking him physically, lest they be burned.Also, his powers bestow him high maneuverability; he can melt himself through anything in his path, even tunneling through the very ground, and can briefly fly using jet bursts of magma to propel himself.
Even for a Logia, this ability has great potential and power; when used excessively by Sakazuki for ten days, it warped the very climate of half an island, permanently rendering it a blazing inferno that embroils even the surrounding sea.
1. Yami Yami no Mi, a unique Logia-type Devil Fruit
Blackbeard ate the Yami Yami no Mi, a unique Logia-type Devil Fruit which allows him to create and control the element of darkness. The darkness appears reminiscent of a fiery black smoke. Unlike a normal Logia user, Blackbeard cannot turn intangible; in fact, any damage he takes will actually hurt worse than normal. Blackbeard has an infinite amount of space inside of his body made of darkness.
The darkness has strong properties of gravity and absorption. The darkness has the power to pull things in, much like a black hole. Even light itself cannot escape. Furthermore, the gravity is so strong that it can completely crush anything in its path. Once something has been pulled in, it can be absorbed into the darkness, where it will be trapped until Blackbeard himself decides to release it. It is described as a void which devours everything and returns all to nothingness.
The most frightening power of the fruit is that it allows Blackbeard to absorb/nullify other people’s Devil Fruit powers. So long as Blackbeard maintains physical contact with the other Devil Fruit user, it is as if the victim never ate their Devil Fruit at all.
